Bringing practitoners, models, insights, experiences nd ideas on green Economy together
RegisterBackground:
A Green Economy certificate course was organised for the students of Madras School of Social Work
(MSSW) pursuing their Masters programme in Social Entrepreneurship along with. The positive
response from the students ensured that the programme got additional mileage with other agencies
resulting in requests for more such programmes. Global trend indicates enormous potential for
growth of the Green Economic opportunities in double digits over the next 20 years as national
priorities shift towards more sustainable solutions. However, the same needs sustained civil society
and academic efforts in developing transformative narratives, carrying out initiatives, showcasing
nature-based solutions, building capacities, enlarging the scope beyond just techno-fixes, ensuring
just transition, providing policy inputs, highlighting flaws in the existing ecosystem, etc., With the
realization that the showcasing of the Green Economy course provides for an opportunity to
additionally focus on some of these as well, it was decided that a Seminar could be organized that
can bring together several such initiatives and insights.
Concept: The Seminar will bring together some of the best models of Green Economy from diverse
domains (primarily within Tamil Nadu, but, also from few other places). The Seminar over a 2-day
period is aimed at showcasing models, examples and experiences of existing Green Economy
initiatives which can provide insights as well as bring out the need for policy inputs.
Scope: The Seminar is seen as a first among several initiatives that can create an opportunity for
contributing towards building an ecosystem for Green Economic movement at the state and national
level. The Seminar aims to bring together diverse ways in which it manifests across the state – Local
Economy models, Sustainable Agriculture, Circular Economy, Nature-based Livelihoods, Green Rural
Entrepreneurship, Green Building, Renewable Energy, etc., Environmental justice cannot be built
without social justice as the recent COP26 Conference has adequately proved. Hence, the Seminar
will also look at focusing on cross-cutting areas for Green Economic system, that includes
investments, innovation, capacity building, governance and technology.
